Does My Portland Home Need a Panel Upgrade Before Installing an EV Charger?
Maybe. Homes with a 200-amp panel and available breaker slots usually don't need an upgrade. But Portland has a lot of older housing, and many of those homes, especially the bungalows and Craftsman houses built before 1970 in inner SE, NE, and North Portland, have 60- or 100-amp panels that almost always require an upgrade before a Level 2 charger can go in. How to Check Your Panel Right Now
Find your electrical panel. It's usually in the garage, basement, utility closet, or sometimes on an exterior wall. Look for two numbers:
- Service size — the amperage printed on the main breaker (the large double breaker at the top). Look for 60A, 100A, or 200A.
- Available slots — empty spaces in the breaker rows. A Level 2 charger needs a 40–60 amp double-pole breaker.

Which Portland Neighborhoods Have the Most Panel Issues?
Based on the housing stock in each area, panel upgrades are most commonly needed in:
- Inner SE Portland — Hawthorne, Belmont, Division, Richmond, Sellwood, Woodstock. Dense bungalow and Craftsman neighborhoods, many built 1910–1950.
- NE Portland — Irvington, Alameda, Beaumont, Hollywood, Cully. Lots of pre-1960 housing.
- North Portland — St. Johns, Kenton, Arbor Lodge, Overlook. Working-class neighborhood with older infrastructure throughout.
- SW Portland hillside neighborhoods built before 1970.
By contrast, Beaverton, Lake Oswego, and newer parts of Tigard have predominantly 200-amp service and are far less likely to need upgrades. West Hills newer builds are similarly panel-ready in most cases.
